Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male/female pattern baldness, is a common condition characterized by hair thinning and loss due to the influence of androgens (male hormones) on the hair follicles.

Causes:

1. Genetics: Inheritance of certain genetic traits from parents.
2. Hormonal Imbalance: High levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent form of testosterone, contribute to hair loss.
3. Age: Hair loss accelerates with age, especially after 40.

Androgenetic alopecia generally known as pattern baldness is mainly caused my male androgen hormones. It is mainly genetic and its permanent treatment is impossible. However, we can minimize it through certain medications.

Symptoms:

1. Thinning of hair on the scalp, particularly on the top and crown.
2. Receding hairline in men.
3. Widening of the central parting in women.
4. Excessive hair shedding.
5. Slow hair growth.

Stages:

1. Norwood-Hamilton Scale (men): Classifies hair loss into seven stages, from minimal thinning to complete baldness.
2. Ludwig Scale (women): Classifies hair loss into three stages, from mild thinning to severe hair loss.

Treatment Options:

1. Medications: Minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia) are FDA-approved treatments.
2. Hair Transplantation: Surgical procedure to relocate hair follicles from the back and sides of the head to the balding areas.
3. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): Non-invasive treatment using low-level laser or light-emitting diodes to stimulate hair growth.

Prevention:

1. Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
2. Reduce stress through exercise, meditation, or therapy.
3. Avoid excessive heat styling and harsh chemical treatments.
4. Use gentle hair care products.
